1. В этом как раз и состоит одна из главных причин характерных для низших обществ «непредусмотрительности», столь часто отмечаемой и оплакиваемой наблюдателями. Конечно, у нее есть причины еще и социального и экономического характера, однако в основном она вытекает из мыслительных привычек первобытных людей. Время, которое наступит потом, они представляют очень смутно: об этом обычно свидетельствуют и их языки, довольно бедные средствами выражения нюансов будущего. Отсюда и своего рода близорукость, мешающая им верно расположить то, что находится чуть дальше в будущем, и которая, безусловно, не способствует предусмотрительности, даже если они и были бы к ней расположены.

Действительно, абсурдно с точки зрения нашего менталитета, предполагающего уважение детерминизма естественных явлений, однако не абсурдно с точки зрения менталитета прелогического, который является мистическим и обращает внимание лишь на непосредственную причинность оккультных сил.
Глава V
1. По-видимому, поиск благоприятных предзнаменований всегда обязателен для сознательно намечаемых предприятий. Однако от такого поиска приходится отказываться, если действовать следует немедленно, под давлением внешних обстоятельств. По этому поводу доктор Нивенгейс сделал следующее замечание. «Кенья так же сознательно, как и бахау, ищут хорошие предзнаменования перед тем, как предпринять что бы то ни было. Но как только этот поиск вступает в конфликт с необходимостью момента, они осмеливаются пренебречь предзнаменованиями. Доказательством служит то, что если, например, сломается топор, то белый не может сделать его снова целым. Духи доставляют предметы из своей страны на корабли, и когда они прибывают, белые выходят им навстречу и завладевают всем: кораблями и остальным. В первое время туземцы связывали с этим поверьем мои постоянные вопросы об их представлениях относительно мертвых. Они полагали, что я через их посредство хотел вступить в отношения с духами, чтобы раздобыть себе одну-две партии прекрасных вещей... Первые прибывшие в эту страну белые были приняты за выходцев с того светаллнатош, или маркой, что, как и оборо,означает «дух мертвого человека».
