The Steppe Route
The Eurasian Steppe is a roughly east–west-oriented zone of rolling grassland extending from Mongolia to Romania. Prehistoric hunter-gatherers were succeeded by herdsman living a life of pastoral nomadism. The steppe naturally became a huge transport route that enabled movement of people, animals, goods and ideas long before the Silk Road became established. It can only be assumed that spices, herbs, medicines and scents also travelled along this route.
